Probably some of my favorite stitches are the post stitches. Have you seen a pattern that said fpdc or bpdc? That means front post double crochet and back post double crochet. You can also use post stitches for single and half double crochet too! These stitches really add some great texture to a hat.
If you’ve only done the “regular” beanie hat using the double crochet or even half-double crochet, those are great stitches and really the foundation of many of these hats you see all over the crochet community. Heck, it’s how I started many of my projects. But…..if you ever try the post stitches, you’ll fall in love!

You can see in the first image the post stitches because they are the ones “raised” in the photo. In the second photo it may be a little harder to tell because the entire hat is done by using front post double crochet stitches alternating with single crochet stitches.
